Why Grounded:42

Grounded:42 wasn't built in perfect conditions.
It was built in real life.

Life doesn't slow down.

  • Work gets busy.
  • Children need you.
  • Travel happens.
  • Stress appears.
  • Motivation disappears.

Before you know it, you've stopped doing the things that make you feel like you.

Grounded:42 exists to change that.

You might know me as

The Garage Gym Geek

I'm Andy — the same person behind @thegaragegymgeek on YouTube and Instagram, where I share home-gym builds, honest training talk and the systems behind Grounded:42.

My Story

The moments that shaped the system

  1. Growing up with nothing

Childhood poverty and a single-parent home. Resourcefulness beats resources.

  2. Bankruptcy

Losing the plan, keeping the responsibility.

  3. Divorce

Rebuilding an identity that wasn't borrowed from anyone else.

  4. Infertility, IVF and adoption

Years of hope, process and things outside my control — then becoming a father.

  5. Divorce again

Starting over a second time, with more to hold together.

  6. Creating Grounded:42

Turning what actually worked into something repeatable.

The themes running through all of it

Starting again

More than once, from further back than I'd have chosen.

Imposter syndrome

Proving it to myself long before proving it to anyone else.

Systems over willpower

When life is loud, only the structure survives.

Training as evidence

The daily proof that I could still be relied on.

None of these experiences define me. But every one of them taught me something about resilience, consistency and starting again.

The Receipts

My own progress, not a stock photo

No dramatic 12-week miracle. Just years of evidence that consistent systems beat motivation — including the seasons where I lost the plot and started again.

Desk-bound, tired and telling myself I'd start Monday.

Years of starts, stops and starting again.

The proof

Proof the boring stuff works

Andy after weeks of consistent training, captured in a photoshoot

During my divorce I did a photoshoot. It wasn't about vanity — it was the first time in a long while I looked at myself and felt like I had a bit of myself back.

That one shoot gave me my confidence back. And it showed me, more clearly than anything else ever had, how powerful the boring consistency could be.

No tricks. No extremes. Just weights, food, hydration, steps and very basic supplementation — done consistently, week after week.

So I did it again. The same unglamorous system, the same approach. The results were even better the second time.

That was the trigger. If this could work for me in the hardest season of my life, I had to bring everything I know together — the fitness, the systems thinking, the coaching — and help other people do the same.

The real why

Strong enough to keep up

This is the picture I keep coming back to. Not a stage, not a mirror — a path, a first bike, and a dad with the energy to run beside her.

That's what the training is actually for. Strength, energy and consistency so you're there for the moments that matter — the ones nobody photographs on purpose.

Why I created Grounded:42

Not because I think I'm the world's best coach

It was created because of something I realised while rebuilding my own life.

People don't need more motivation.

People don't need another diet.

People don't need another six-week transformation.

They need systems.

The same systems that help organisations succeed can help people succeed.

My professional background

Architecture diagrams and system design work on a deskHiking at golden hour

For over 25 years I've worked in the corporate world designing and improving complex systems.

I've worked across a variety of technical and leadership roles and today I'm an Enterprise Architect.

My job is to understand why systems fail, remove unnecessary complexity and build environments where people consistently succeed.

Eventually I realised people aren't much different.

When our systems fail…

our habits fail.

When our habits fail…

our confidence disappears.

Change the system…

and everything changes.

Grounded:42 applies decades of systems thinking to everyday life.

The Philosophy

Five things I coach by

Consistency beats perfection

Small wins create momentum

Action builds confidence

Systems beat willpower

Fitness is the vehicle. Life is the destination.

Who it's for

Grounded:42 is for…

Busy professionals

Full diaries, high demands, no time for guesswork.

Parents

Everyone else comes first — until the system makes room for you.

Rebuilding after a hard season

Starting again without starting from scratch.

Lost momentum

You've done it before. You'll do it again — differently this time.

Know what to do

The knowledge isn't the gap. Consistency is.

Want more from yourself

More energy, more confidence, more follow-through.

Consistency beats perfection. Every time.

The people who succeed long-term aren't the most motivated.

They're the most consistent.

Grounded:42 is where you build that consistency.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

The next six weeks are happening anyway

Become someone who follows through
